When love is not madness, it is not love.  ~Pedro Calderon de la Barca

fpfarmersmarket_logo Nothing screams the weekend like heading off to the Saturday morning farmers market and scoring some local, healthy fare to eat.  I work my way stall by stall checking out what is in and what is fresh.  This weekend habit gives me the opportunity to feel a little more connected to my food choices and I find that I eat healthier because of it.  With a farmers market as large as Ferry Plaza’s it is hard to imagine getting all the way through it in one day.  Good news, it is also open on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Hours are Tuesdays & Thursday 10am-2pm and Saturdays 8am-2pm

We are inclined that if we watch a football game or baseball game, we have taken part in it.  ~John F. Kennedy, 1961

Some games stay with you for a while- long after they are over.  I think this game will be one of those. What games have stuck with you?

What Does Courage Mean to You?

Posted on February 1, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I love those motivational posters that we have all seen. You know the ones; with one striking image, usually of brilliant natural occurrence or an image of man in the presence of nature that shows how small we really are, but the feats that we are all capable of. My favorite one is called Courage and the image is of a penguin jumping from a HUGE iceberg, while the other penguins look on. Everyone can use a few words of encouragement now and again so I will leave you with this quote for the week.

“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.” ~Mark Twain

That may sound a little crazy but it doesn’t have to be. When it comes time to plan the menu for your annual game day soiree, there are lots of great recipes and ideas out there to please your crowd without destroying your diet.

I love chicken wings but fried foods are definitely a no-no so I bake them now instead of the traditional frying. This little tip that I picked up from the Food Network drastically reduces the amount of fat and calories. If you are serving wings, you have to have sauce so when making your sauce, keep the sugar content in mind and use the least amount possible. Better yet, substitute the sugar with a little honey for a great new taste. Rather than have a full entrée, consider sliders or a taco bar. You can load up on veggies, everyone can create their own dish and you’ll save money. Who doesn’t love that?

Helen Keller Quote of the Day

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”

Something to think about for the day…

Classic Swedish Meatballs Recipe

Posted on January 21, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I love food, but it is often hard to come up with a new recipe that I can use for any dinner party.  So here is a classic recipe that is delicious, yet not boring:

 Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1 pound chopped beef
  • 1/2 pound pork sausage meat
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • butter or margarine
  • mushroom soup

Soak bread crumbs in milk 5 minutes. Add onion, meat, seasonings and egg, and blend well with hands. Form small balls with floured hands and sauté in small amount of butter or margarine, just enough to keep meat from sticking to pan. Dilute condensed mushroom soup with same amount of milk, in saucepan. Stir over low heat until blended and hot, but not boiling. When meat is well browned on all sides cover with hot mushroom soup. Cover and let simmer over low heat for 5 minutes. Yield: 20-25 small balls.

The Death Bear Comes To Visit

Posted on January 12, 2010 · Leave a Comment

OMG! I think this is the cutest, yet much needed, thing in the world.  Have you ever heard of the Death Bear?  He is in Brooklyn, New York and he comes to take away all the things that remind you of a painful break-up, a bad habit, or any other painful thing in your life.

You text the company and they send the Death Bear to come by and retrieve the items.  Once the items are with the Death Bear, they are never to be seen again.

I would love for Death Bear to make a trip to Atlanta and take away a few people in my life.  Do you need a Death Bear and for what?  Maybe I should start a Death Bear service in Atlanta.

More on the Death Bear here.

Foods To Keep You On Track

Posted on January 11, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Have you stuck to your diet already? If you are a little off and on so far, I found a few foods that can kick start your diet or keep you on the right track.  I don’t know if I agree with the term “skinny foods,” but there are some foods out there than can keep you fit and shedding pounds.

My favorite one is the Fiery Chicken Salad, I like anything g hot and spicy.  Little did I know that adding a dash of hot sauce or hot spices slows down your eating, so now that I know the benefits of drowning my food in hot sauce I will continue to do it.

Read about the foods here.  What are your foods that keep you on track or “skinny foods?”

From The Mouths Of Cardiologist

I found this quote appropriate for the New Year.  Since it’s the “New Year, New Year” time, I thought I would give you some encouragement to keep you on track with your diets or lifestyle changes.
